If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else? – RuPaul
In February last year, I got my second degree in Circle of Cerridwen and formally declared my devotion to Kuan Yin. What followed was not a coincidence. I think it was all part of a journey to self-love which I think has made me more compassionate towards myself and others.
In July last year, I joined a coaching group about body image called 21 Days to Bodylove. It helped me work out body image issues I’d had. Some had been since I was a teenager with cystic acne. Some had been more recent since I gained weight after surgery.
In October last year, I started getting some personal coaching that had helped rewire negative thoughts patterns in my head. As part of the personal coaching, I began 2015 by doing affirmations every day with a dear friend. I think of it as doing little spells every day. I also started incorporating loving-kindness meditations into my yoga practice.
In November last year, I started doing yoga every day. When I started, it was with the goal of balancing my emotions and making my days go more smoothly. Whenever I leave yoga class, I feel like my days go much better. So I started doing daily yoga and then learned about a kind of yoga meditation called Yoga Nidra, which helps me in times of stress or if I have trouble falling asleep.
I would like my life to be a statement of love and compassion – and where it isn’t, that’s where my work lies. – Ram Dass
This is the first time I’ve looked at my 2014 from this perspective. These are all things I did as part of self-love but it also influenced how I loved other people. It made space for me to improve my relationships with myself and others. It helped how I communicate with my husband, for example.
I think of these practices as expressions of love and compassion for myself and others. I believe Kuan Yin guided me to to them after I dedicated myself to her.
