31 May 2020: Pentecost and the Empire

Layperson Lecture #12

To quote Ecclesiastes chapter 3 verse 1, “There is a time for every purpose under heaven.” So now it’s time for a Layperson Lecture! I’m Constance McEntee, seminary drop-out and the Idiot Before G0D.

I originally wrote this before my surgery and queued it to post on Pentecost. It’s a more traditional Pentecost theme, but that almost seemed out of place after the two Black men killed by police last week (yes, two: Tony McDade was also killed, #BlackTransLivesMatter). I felt a message about Pentecost and evangelism just weren’t right.

But, evangelism (link opens in another browser tab) can be done in various ways. Some use words. Some kneel in quiet protest. Some use weapons against those kneeling in quiet protest. Some react violently to the violence they’ve witnessed.

One of Jesus’ main messages was to resist the Empire. He was executed by the state for this message. Pentecost is about when his followers rose up against the Empire and brought hope to the oppressed.

So, if you think you have something to say that you don’t think is being said from your local pulpit, say it and speak in whatever way you thing best sends your message. And do so with the blessings of the Lover, the Beloved, and the Love Overflowing.

Amen, and go with G0D.
